The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), was established in 2006 as a public–private initiative to strengthen India’s capacity in public health education, research, and policy. Conceived with the support of the Government of India, state governments, academia, and industry leaders, PHFI was created to address a critical national need — building a skilled public health workforce and institutional ecosystem to improve population health outcomes across the country.
Over the years, PHFI has nurtured a network of regional Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs) across India, building strong foundations for public health education and research.

In recognition of their significant contribution to advancing public health education and research, IIPH Hyderabad, IIPH Bhubaneswar, and IIPH Bengaluru have been collectively notified as the PHFI Institute of Public Health Sciences (Deemed to be University) under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
